Tooth decay is the most common reason for tooth removal.
Dr. Zaidi will perform a thorough examination of your teen and gums complete with digital x-rays. Digital x-rays allow us to maximize efficiency and your comfort during the procedure, and ensure that a tooth extraction is right for you.
Dr. Zaidi will begin the procedure by disinfecting and sanitizing the treatment site. For simple extractions, you’ll be given a local anesthetic, numbing the area around the tooth to be removed.
For more complex extractions, we may recommend sedation, like minimally inhaled sedation (laughing gas), or oral conscious sedation to keep you as comfortable as possible during the procedure.
Using specialized dental tools, Dr. Zaidi gently loosen the tooth in its socket. Once it’s loose enough she’ll remove the tooth. If the tooth is impacted, it may need to be cut into smaller pieces in order to be extracted effectively.
For simple extractions, the process is a straightforward one. Dr. Zaidi will clean and numb the area surrounding the tooth to be extracted. Dr. Z will then use a specialized tool called a dental elevator to gently loosen the tooth in its socket. Once it is sufficiently loosened, she will grip the tooth with a pair of dental forceps, freeing it from the gumline.
Surgical extractions are a bit more complicated, and are reserved for more complex issues, like impacted teeth. If you require a surgical extraction, you’ll most likely be given one of our sedation options, like minimally inhaled sedation (laughing gas), or oral conscious sedation. Dr. Z will make an incision in your gum tissue to expose the impacted tooth before extracting it. In some cases, the tooth will be cut into smaller pieces to be removed one at a time.
An extracted tooth usually only takes 1-2 weeks to heal.
Tooth extractions are incredibly common, and can be required for a multitude of reasons. Whenever possible, Dr. Zaidi will opt for a root canal over an extraction to treat an infected or decayed tooth, but sometimes, the tooth is too far gone and must be removed before it begins to affect the rest of the teeth, or even the jaw bone.
Some people experience crowding of their teeth, creating another reason a tooth may need to be extracted. When your teeth are crowding each other, they put pressure on their neighbors, leading to gum recession and eventual (unplanned) tooth loss. Crowded teeth may also hinder orthodontic treatment, so patients who are getting braces or clear aligner therapy at Urban Dental Studio may require the extraction of a few teeth to make room for the rest of their smile as it is moved into it’s ideal place.
Impacted teeth present a similar problem, as they are trapped below the gumline, maybe even growing at the wrong angle and putting pressure on the surrounding teeth.
The short answer is: no. With sedation options available, like minimally inhaled sedation (laughing gas) and oral conscious sedation, as well as local anesthetic, you won’t feel any pain during your tooth extraction. At Urban Dental Studio, our gentle extraction methods combined with the latest imaging technologies, ensure your continual comfort during the entire process.
The recovery after a tooth extraction should only last a few days at most. Here’s some helpful tips to speed the recovery process during the first 24 hours.
Dr. Zaidi will provide you with additional guidance in taking care of your extraction site. If you’re feeling pain after three or four days of recovery, give us a call right away at (240)-308-8588. Continued pain or bleeding may be a sign of infection or dry-socket, and the sooner Dr. Z sees you, the sooner she can relieve your pain and eliminate the problem.
The average healing time after a basic extraction is 3 to 4 weeks. However, a surgical extraction is a little more invasive and can take a little longer to heal. You can expect to heal anywhere from 1 to 3 months after surgical extraction.
The approximate length of recovery from an extraction is based on many different factors, including how many teeth were extracted, the location of the teeth, the type of extraction, your overall health, and how well you follow aftercare instructions.
The bulk of the healing occurs within the first 3 days but within a week a blood clot should be fully formed. By the 2-week mark, the socket should be almost completely healed besides some lingering tenderness and sensitivity.
As long as you carefully follow the aftercare instructions provided to you by your dentist, take some time to rest and you will heal in no time.
Extractions are commonly covered by dental insurance as long as the extraction is medically necessary because of tooth decay, gum disease, or dental trauma. If the tooth could not be salvaged by some other restorative treatment, then it is likely to be covered under restorative treatment at 50 to 80% of the cost.
You would then need to cover 20 to 50% of the remaining cost. However, you should contact your insurance provider directly to find out the details of your plan and any other requirements that they have.
This depends on the tooth being extracted. Wisdom teeth are the only teeth that do not need to be replaced because they’re an extra set of molars that many of us no longer have enough jaw space for.
As we evolved, our jaws shrank, but we still receive the same molars that were present when we had larger jaws. This often results in these teeth being impacted, causing oral health problems, pain, headaches, sinus problems, and even damage to our other teeth. This is why these teeth are removed.
However, any of your other teeth will need to be replaced to prevent the consequences of bone loss. When you lose a tooth, your jawbone no longer receives stimulation which causes the underlying bone to resorb.
This process is irreversible and causes a lot of problems, including changes to your bite and facial structure, increased risk of future tooth loss, shifting teeth, and premature facial sagging. Only a dental implant can prevent bone loss.
This is the highest quality tooth replacement a patient can get. However, dentures and dental bridges can at least restore the functionality and aesthetics of the teeth as well as prevent the teeth from shifting. If you need a tooth replacement, contact us at Urban Dental Studio today to schedule a consultation with Dr. Zaidi.
"I came in with an infected wisdom tooth that was causing a lot of pain. Pressure / pain on the whole right side of mouth, cheeks and eyes from the infection. Dr. Zaidi numbed around the tooth and extracted the wisdom tooth with no pain within 10 minutes! I was pretty nervous because I have never had a tooth removed or any issues with my teeth in the past. Dr. Zaidi made me feel super comfortable and walked me through the whole process. I also just got my night guard from my teeth grinding in my sleep and it feels great!
