Composite resin fillings harden immediately so you can use the tooth to chew immediately. Just wait until the local anesthesia wears off so you don’t bite yourself.
First, an oral exam will be conducted to check the condition of your teeth and look for the presence of tooth decay. We may notice a cavity during a routine dental checkup. In some cases, x-rays may be taken to check the extent and severity of the decay.
If we detect that you have a cavity, we will schedule a dental filling. At a separate appointment, we will administer local anesthesia to numb the area so you won’t feel any pain. We will use a dental drill to remove the decay from the tooth.
We will apply an acid gel to the tooth to remove any bacteria and then fill the inside of the tooth with a composite resin filling. The filling will be cured with a UV light and will instantly harden. Finally, we will polish the tooth. You can use the tooth as soon as the anesthetic has worn off.
It’s important to return to our Clarksburg office every 6 months for a dental cleaning and checkup to have plaque buildup removed from the mouth and for early detection of oral health problems like cavities.
Dental fillings last for up to 15 years, but some patients’ fillings have lasted for a lifetime.
No, getting a filling does not hurt because we will numb your mouth with anesthesia. The only part of the procedure that could cause pain without anesthesia is the drilling of the tooth that is used to remove decay. The filling itself is painless. After the anesthetic has worn off, your tooth may feel a little sore for a day or two. If that is the case, take some anti-pain medication and try not to chew on that side of the mouth until the pain subsides.
When cavities are left untreated, the decay will become more severe and can no longer be treated with a filling. You will then require a root canal or extraction which is much more expensive, timely, and a drawn-out healing process.
Tooth loss should also be avoided at all costs because losing a tooth will result in bone loss and shifting teeth, and changes to your facial muscles. You will also need to have the tooth replaced to stop or minimize the effects but the only tooth restoration that will prevent bone loss are dental implants, which is the most expensive option.
Long story short, attend regular dental appointments to spot cavities early and get them filled as soon as possible to avoid the headache of costing yourself more time and money later on.

Dental fillings can stain just like natural teeth, so you should limit your consumption of staining foods and drinks.
